The Holy Spirit - July 6th

This past week we had an in depth discussion led by Shelly Ewing in which we peeked behind the curtain of the mystical force we call The Holy Spirit. The class was filled with some insights related to questions about God, the Holy Spirit and Its role before Christ and after the ressurection. Of course we all left with some unanswered questions as well, but it was thought-provoking to read through the Scriptures and discuss what role The Holy Spirit plays in our lives as Christians.

This week I will be filling in for Shelly who will be visiting her parents in Florida. I am excited about the discussion topic this week because of the difference I believe it can have in our daily lives if we embrace the message.

Many of you have probably received the email of what is now being called the "Last Lecture". The Last Lecture was delivered on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon, and an abbreviated version was given on Oprah in October. The abbreviated version is the main one that has been circlating through millions of inboxes around the world. For those of you who have not seen it, the Last Lecture was delivered by Dr. Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon. Dr. Pausch had just received the news that he had pancreatic cancer and was given 3-6 months of good health. In watching the lecture on numerous occassions, I have not only been moved by his courage, his attitude, and his outlook, but I have been struck by a perspective that I believe closely resembles that of Christ.

In saying this, I am in no way insinuating that Dr. Pausch is any less flawed than the next guy, but I do believe God has revealed something to him that only those in his position can truly comprehend. Comprehension is only part of the battle for people like Dr. Pausch. As he says in his lecture, we cannot control the cards we are dealt; we can only control the response. His couregous response and his ability to communicate what has been revealed to him is truly a lesson in life living.

This story speaks for itself, but I believe the story is only scratching the surface. What lies below is real world, present day, Christ-like lessons and examples. Lessons and examples, whose magnitude we cannot possibly comprehend, because our last hours do not feel so close. The good news is I don't believe we have to fully comprehend. We are charged with embracing and living out the small truths that have been reinforced. The truths of faith, of family, of friends, of right and wrong, and of love. Living these, in small daily steps, is our call.

I look forward to discussing this further with you on Sunday and maybe beyond as we move into the fall. In the meantime, please check out Dr. Pausch's homepage linked above. There you will find information about his fight to live life to the fullest, as well as links to the lectures and interviews he has done.
